Packing circles in a circle

SHORT DESCRIPTION

The children should pack several small circles into one large circle so that all circles are as close together as possible. The exercise is available in two variations. While the children first arrange lids of different sizes on a sheet of paper, in the second variant they group themselves using hula hoops and thus orient themselves spatially as a group.

Goal

Here the children explore how to coordinate in a group in order to achieve a common goal.

Material

  1. Lids of different sizes, at least 1x per child (e.g. from preserving jars)
  2. Hula-Hoop tyres, 1x per child
  3. A3 paper with circumference
  4. Ropes or similar for laying out a circle on the ground
